What is gold fill metal? It consists of a base metal with a thick layer of gold mechanically bonded to the surface by heat and pressure. Gold fill is legally required to contain 5% gold and is much thicker than gold plated, which is about 0.05% gold. Most fashion jewelry is gold plated and the gold color will eventually wear off, exposing the base metal beneath. Gold fill is much higher quality, easy to care for, and should maintain its color for a lifetime.
